Essential Fishing Gear - Part 1

Fishing gear which can be considered essential is going to vary depending upon the type of fishing you do or indeed the species of fish you are after. In this article however we'll be looking the equipment which is universally essential across all forms of fishing regardless of type or species.

A good quality rod and reel are at the heart of your fishing enjoyment. You should go for a reliable brand which is not going to cause complications or break after just a few months of regular use. Before buying a rod and reel you should think carefully about the kind of fishing you will be doing and the types of fish you'll be catching. Your rod and reel choice will be largely guided by those two important factors. If you can it's best to go to a dedicated fishing store and hopefully some friendly staff will be able to help you out with some expert advice.

The quality of your line is very important as you want it to stay durable and strong through repeated use and certainly not break when fighting fish under normal circumstances. There's actually quite a vast array of fishing lines made from different materials and in different colours. The debate over fishing line colour still rages with many believing it actually makes no difference at all and others swearing that it does. How much it takes to break a fishing line is called its breaking strain and you should go for a breaking strain which is going to be suitable for the fish you're after. Fisherman will normally go for the lightest they can reasonably get away with.

When talking about fishing rods, reels and lines please remember that they should all be 'matched' together. This is something which the staff in a store can help you with or if you buy a fishing kit all the gear will already be appropriately matched. In part 2 we'll continue our look at essential fishing gear.
